iPhone and First Tueday

Kamikaze Media, represented by Kjetil Horneland, held a talk at First Tuesday in Bergen on the 4th of May. We talked about the possibilities regarding iPhone applications. All companies have different content, distribution needs or business models. When going mobile there are several approaches available on many platforms. We talked about the advantages and disadvantages by going native or making mobile web-apps.

The future of publishing

I was lucky to attend this event last week. Several interesting subjects were up for debate, but I'd like to summarize two of these; Formats and Content, and Business and Politics.

Formats and Content

The publishing industry is currently looking at the music industry and how their content has been distributed from the early digital days to the current always-available content online. Before the internet, both publishers and musicians created added value to their distributed materials, for instance Enhanced CDs or Personal CD-ROMs were highly popular. When the internet became mainstream, these products died overnight because the buyers weren't really interested in the limited and after a while outdated added value on for instance a CD-ROM. What's evident in later years is that the music buyers just want easily accessible music.

How do we get our content out to our readers? The market for online publishing is still very young, and publishers don't know which platforms or devices to turn to or which qualities on each product that will fit their needs. Being unable to target all of them, many publishers sit on the fence while waiting for a suitable all-round electronic marketplace to emerge. They agreed that an open platform allowing them to create content using a tool that caters their existing skill-sets is desperately required.

What will such an online publishing format require? Several publishers at I:P suggested a modified version of the EPUB format, using HTML5. One could keep creating bundled content files, and HTML5 is a highly development friendly environment. Having a single standard format, the publishers can easily be allowed to deliver content to multiple platforms. Chances are that readers will consume content on a mobile device such as HTC Desire, iPhone, iPads. We're at the start of a new reality where telecommunications and media will merge into a heavily content consuming market; the mobile internet.

Business and Politics

For this to work, we need to create a sustainable business model. Where does the money come from? By creating content with interactive experiences to be distributed online, will the costs be a part of marketing, or a part of the creative process of making a product? Who will cut their losses - the publishers or the writers?

Today, many publishers are sharing their content for free, online, to boost their paperback sales. This may have worked previously when there weren't any real possibility of making money by selling large quantities of ebooks. Publishers will soon realize that the freemium model won't work on publishers either. As any other freemium web service, they end up devaluating their own product online. Why would customers pay for something later on, when they get it for free right now?

It's a learning process to figure out what will work and what won't. Looking at digital distributing, the trend points to simple transactions and simple content. Spotify is an example that changed user behavior overnight, leaving the user to crave the instant consuming of the musical content itself, not the extra features surrounding it.

Gosu Design delivers strategic design competence and consultancy to TV stations, production houses, IPTV vendors and other business in the digital industry.

Gosu wanted something stunning that would work well on a 16:9 screen when designing their new web presence.
New clients and projects

Communities

Kamikaze Media has started the year with community enabled web sites for interest organizations such as Brak and Proscen. With these releases, Pangea now sports three new modules for your organizational needs.

Market: The market module allows you to specify ad category hierarchies, as well as the ability to design ads; set up your own ad type for real estate or jobs.

Project: The project module lets our users upload portfolio projects directly to their profiles, or the organizations they have connections with. To illustrate, here is our Brak project at Design Region Bergen.

Report: The need for a more advanced reporting system has emerged as our communities grow in size and activity. The new system enables a member to report another user entirely, or to report any entry submission on the web site.

Web Applications and Music Video

In other news, we are working with web applications for McDonald's, Noroff and Narvesen. Our design team is hard at work on the new profile and music video for The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band.
